a short bout of movement · two minutes · the signal
Exercise is the best-evidenced mood lever there is, and the surprising part is how fast it works. A 2018 trial put 66 adults through ten minutes of brisk walking, ten minutes of meditation, or ten minutes of sitting: both active arms improved mood, and walking beat fatigue best. In 2024 a meta-analysis of 103 single-bout studies, 4,671 people, put a number on it — a moderate lift in mood and a bigger drop in anxiety, measured within half an hour of stopping.
A short bout of movement changes blood flow, arousal, and the story you tell yourself about the day (“at least I moved”). The lift is immediate and fades over hours, which is a feature: it’s available again tomorrow.
The shortest well-tested bout is ten minutes, not two. Two minutes is here because it’s the size that fits a gray morning; think of it as the first two of ten, and if you keep going, the meadow won’t stop you.
One push button. Press it and the signal goes WALK with the beat; press again for faster; hold to stop. The phone counts steps if you carry it.
